Dean Wareham formed the American Luna with Stanley Demeski and Justin Harwood (Demeski formerly of The Feelies and Harwood formerly of New Zealand band The Chills). Other band members were Sean Eden, Lee Wall, and Britta Phillips. They announced plans to breakup in 2004, and played their final concert at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 28, 2005.
Luna disbanded amicably in 2005 after the release of Rendezvous (2004), a magnificent finale by any standard.

Tišma, the Surbian Luna's lead singer and lyricist, was joined by guitarist Zoran Bulatović - Bale (former member of Pekinška patka), Ivan Fece - Firchie (drums), and Jasmina Mitrušić - Mina (keyboards, additional vocals, occasional lead vocal). Luna was the only Yugoslav exponent of dark, arty post-punk, and a worthy counterpart to bands such as Joy Division or Siouxsie and the Banshees. They recorded only one album, the critically acclaimed Nestvarne stvari (Unreal Things), which was released in 1984, after the band had already split. When Luna broke up, Firchie joined EKV, while Tišma and Mina formed La Strada, using the name of Tišma's old band. Tišma has also published several books of poetry. Even though they never gained wide popularity like some of their contemporaries on the Yugoslav new wave scene, Luna have since gained the status of a semi-legendary cult band. The band reformed just once, for an appearance at the 2004 Exit festival in Novi Sad.
